A memorable job interview:1-6-2011

A memorable job interview:

One of the best job interviews that I went on was in 2010 with an attorney as I was applying for a paralegal job.  The attorney did such a nice job with me.  When I arrived at the job interview he immediately stopped what he was doing and asked me if I would like a cup of coffee or water or anything.  I was nervous so this was not an option.  I introduced myself as his “interview.”  He then asked if I would not mind waiting for fifteen minutes as he was busy doing something.  I did not mind at all.  So there I sat with my portfolio and a bunch of magazines and I just took a deep breath and waiting until he was ready.  This was a “new” office in a new area with a “new” attorney.  Thus he wanted a Legal secretary to run his “new” office.

So, once the attorney was ready, he called me in and we went to a huge conference room where he then began the interview.  Basically he investigated me online and found out a lot about me before I even started to talk.  He said he was impressed that I joined Mike Dooley’s site and that he admired me for that.   He asked me all sorts of questions and I answered directly and honestly.  I also gave him a portfolio of my college papers, grades (transcripts), and you name it was all there.  He did go through each page asking me questions as well.

By the end of the 2 hour interview he said he enjoyed talking to me and that he honestly felt that I had a passion for law and expertise in “paralegal” as my degree stated.  He then said that he felt I would be bored working for him with the legal secretary tasks he would have me tend to.  He said let’s not waste each other’s time and you need to find a job that is better suited for your passion for law.

I was excited that the attorney found my passion for law exciting and that he was direct with me.  I had an answer that day!  It was such a good feeling to know that he could see my excitement for law and my passion for wanting to be a “paralegal.”
